How does the queue work?

Click the button below to see a diagram of how your Steam Discovery Queue works. How does this work?

How is my Discovery Queue generated?

The products in your queue are brought together from a variety of sources – new, popular, top-selling or similar to other products you have on Steam. It tries to strike a balance between prioritizing products known to be good, and new products that you may find interesting.

Are there any products that won’t show up in the Discovery Queue?

The Discovery Queue will not show any product that is already in your library, on your wishlist, or that you’ve seen in a Discovery Queue previously. It will also exclude products that you have marked as 'Ignored' or have previously indicated that you wished not to be recommended to you.

Why are there some games from genres I don’t like shown in the Discovery Queue?

Everyone is different, and tastes in games change over time. We mix in products based on newness or popularity, in addition to games similar to ones you’ve been playing, to help you discover new things that you didn’t realize could be interesting.

What happens when I get through all the products in my queue?

Once you’ve explored the products in your queue, you’ll have the option of creating another queue. A new queue is automatically generated for you each day to keep it fresh and incorporate any new data we have. If you manage to look through all the products on Steam (quite an effort!) then you’ll only be able to get a new queue when new games or software are released.

Why are there only 12 products in the queue?

There is only a limited number of items in each queue to give a clear accomplishable goal - every time you launch Steam you can explore through your queue and feel like you’ve gotten a good idea of products that may be interesting to you. Of course, you can always start a new queue if you want to continue exploring the Steam catalog in this way.

How is selecting ‘Ignore’ different from just going to the next item?

Selecting ‘Ignore’ on a product in your Discovery Queue lets Steam know that you don’t want to see that product in any featured area or recommendations (it may still show up in areas such as ‘Popular New Releases’). It does not change what kind of games will be recommended to you.
